煤焦油是一种黑色或褐色粘稠状液体，具有可燃性、溶解性、腐蚀性。按密度的不同，分为轻油和重油两种类型。产量约占装炉煤的6.2%，其经过蒸馏、高温裂解、溶剂萃取等加工方法可得到苯类、酚类、萘类、高级酚等芳香族化合物，被广泛用于众多工业部门；煤焦油经过催化加氢后可得到汽油、柴油等机动车燃料油。

The coal tar is a black or brown viscous liquid,and is characterized by flammability,solubleness and corrosivity.By the specific gravity,it is divided into light oil and heavy oil.Output accounts for 6.2%of coal charging furnace.It can be processed into the aromatic compounds such as benzene,phenols,naphthalenes,higher phenols,etc.by distilling,pyrolysis,solvent extraction,etc.,and is widely applied to various industrial sectors.The coal tar can be made into fuel oils of the motor vehicle such as gasoline,diesel,etc.through catalytic hydrogenation.
